I allowed people to sign up for this site years ago. Soon after creating the latest incarnation, I wanted to pin as many parts of my various websites together as possible. I was thinking about subscriptions so that if I thought, or if I was told in feedback, that I was making desirable content, I could let anyone who wanted to be informed be informed, or even develop my own idea of patrons (yes, the idea of that business, but not that business), and, yes, I was thinking about monetization.
So I did it; I turned on the switch. And then “people” signed on. But almost all didn’t register. It was curious.
No registration of the email. Names that look like fairly good random alphanumeric passwords, sometimes including URLs. And a stretch of Bitcoin Binance labels.
OK. Open registration, not so good.
It took some effort to tamp it down. Still, I wanted to fix it and improve my user system, too. I’ve found a Round Tuit for that.
My user system is another work in progress. I hope some of the users who have been showing up recently will help me tailor the system and let me contact them at least once or twice to check in until the pages for profiles, settings, and special access are better formed and functional.
Opted out will be the norm, of course. Anything I provide or sell is meant to be sought out, not pushed. If I have to push product on people or advertise sales, that’s taking away from any reason for this place, my online place. And yes, I’m putting this out there now. I never said it before, but that’s why I’ve got no ads, no Google sales, or other baloney sausage. If I ever get merch on the hook, or subscriber-limited content, there will be a reason for the dot-com. If I make an ad-supporting and/or ad-supported site, that’s a different, separate animal and only by necessity.
Another thing is the attempted ads in my comments. The bots are everywhere, and if they are not twisting our perception, they are selling something. Not here. Originally, they were just spam caught and deleted. Well, you can’t post a link now, and eventually only vetted members who don’t abuse it will be allowed to have that freedom in comments, posts, and messages.
